OpenAI's own help page puts it plainly: ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors, and placement isn't guaranteed. No tactic buys a citation. What you can do is make each page easy to find, easy to quote and easy to trust. That raises the odds every time ChatGPT searches a question you cover.
This checklist has seven items, each tied to how ChatGPT retrieves and chooses sources:
- Let OAI-SearchBot crawl the page
- Use a clean H2/H3 hierarchy with one idea per paragraph
- Put the answer in the first two sentences
- Cover the topic semantically, not just the keyword
- Cite primary sources and publish original data
- Send freshness signals that match real updates
- Build consensus beyond your own site
It's written for teams whose pages already rank in Google. Evidence suggests ChatGPT draws partly on Google results, so a ranking page is often the quickest one to turn into a citation.
Where ChatGPT Gets Its Sources, and Where Google Fits In
When ChatGPT searches the web, it doesn't search your prompt. According to OpenAI's own description of ChatGPT search, it rewrites the prompt into one or more targeted queries, sends them to search providers, and ranks what comes back using multiple factors.
Two conditions have to hold before a page can be cited:
- Retrieval. The page shows up in the results for one of those rewritten queries, and OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, is allowed to read it.
- Selection. Among the retrieved pages, yours holds the clearest, most trustworthy answer to that narrower question.
Every item on the checklist below serves one of these two conditions.
Bing, Google and OpenAI's Own Index
OpenAI's help center says only that ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, and the providers it lists are Microsoft and Shopify. Google isn't among them. Independent evidence goes further:
- In August 2025, Search Engine Roundtable relayed a report from The Information that OpenAI partially used Google results scraped by SerpApi for news and sports answers.
- In a test reported by Semrush, a page reachable only through Google still earned a ChatGPT citation.
- Peec AI's 2026 analysis found ChatGPT's server events naming OpenAI's own index alongside third-party scraping providers.
Why a Google Ranking Helps but Doesn't Guarantee a Citation
Ranking puts your domain in the candidate pool. It doesn't decide which page gets quoted. In a 2025 study, Ahrefs found that just 10% of ChatGPT's short-tail results hit Google's top 10, against 65% for Perplexity. ChatGPT tends to cite domains that rank, often through a different page on them.
Across AI assistants, Ahrefs also reported that 80% of cited URLs don't rank anywhere in Google for the original query.
What Converging SEO and AEO Means for Your Workflow
Traditional SEO and answer engine optimization now share one foundation: pages that can be crawled, indexed and understood. If ChatGPT pulls candidates from Bing and Google results, the work you did to rank still counts.
What changes is the unit you optimize. SEO works on the page; citations are won by the passage. So start with pages that already rank, because retrieval is already solved for them. Most of the shift from SEO to AEO is editorial work from there.
The On-Page Checklist to Get Cited by ChatGPT
Four on-page checks decide whether ChatGPT can reach a page and lift a clean answer from it. Work through them one page at a time, starting with pages that already rank.
| Item | What passes | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crawl access | OAI-SearchBot can fetch the page | Automated check |
| 2. Structure | Logical H2/H3 outline, one idea per paragraph | Automated check plus a read-through |
| 3. Answer-first | Direct answer under each heading | Editorial review |
| 4. Semantic coverage | Related sub-questions answered | Editorial review |
The first two are technical, so a tool can test them. AEO Tester, a free Chrome extension, checks AI crawler access and heading hierarchy in one click, along with indexability and structured data. Items 3 and 4 still need an editor's judgement.
1. Let OAI-SearchBot Crawl the Page
Block the wrong OpenAI bot and your pages drop out of ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot appear only as navigational links.
- Allow
OAI-SearchBotin robots.txt. - Decide on
GPTBot, the training crawler, separately. Blocking it doesn't block citations. - Check CDN and firewall bot rules too.
- Run a quick AI robots.txt check, then allow about 24 hours for OpenAI to adjust.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
2. Use a Clean H2/H3 Hierarchy With One Idea per Paragraph
ChatGPT quotes passages, not pages, so every section has to survive being lifted out on its own.
- One H1 — then H2s for the main questions and H3s for sub-questions, with no skipped levels.
- One idea per paragraph — each paragraph becomes a quotable unit.
- Self-contained sections — no “as mentioned above”; name the subject again.
Paste a URL into the heading structure analyzer to see the outline a machine reads.
3. Put the Answer in the First Two Sentences
If the answer sits in paragraph four, the model has to dig for it. Under every question-style heading, answer in the first one or two sentences, then add detail, examples and caveats.
- Write the answer as a complete statement that names the subject.
- Keep links out of that answer sentence and put supporting links after it.
- Test it: paste the answer into a chat reply with no heading above it. If it still makes sense, it's extractable.
4. Cover the Topic Semantically, Not Just the Keyword
One keyword can't match the several narrower searches ChatGPT runs behind a single prompt. A page that also answers the adjacent sub-questions matches more of them.
- Collect the questions your audience actually asks, from sales calls, support tickets and People Also Ask, and answer the relevant ones.
- Use the related terms a specialist would use instead of repeating the head keyword.
- Name entities consistently: the same product name, standard or person, spelled the same way every time.
Trust Signals That Get You Cited by ChatGPT
Being retrieved is half the job. The other half is being the most defensible source among the pages ChatGPT pulled back. When several candidates say roughly the same thing, the one with checkable sources, a named author and an honest update date is the easier one to quote.
Two on-site trust items belong on the checklist:
- Sourcing: can a reader, or a model, verify each claim on the page?
- Freshness: does the page show when it was last genuinely updated?
Neither is a guarantee. OpenAI doesn't publish how ChatGPT chooses between candidates, so treat these as tie-breakers that tip close calls your way rather than as switches you can flip.
5. Cite Primary Sources and Publish Original Data
A number only your page has is a number ChatGPT has to credit you for. Original data, such as your own benchmarks, test results or survey findings, can't be sourced anywhere else.
- Link each claim to its primary source: official documentation or the original study, not a roundup of it.
- Show the method behind your own data so it can be checked.
- Name the author on the page, with the experience that qualifies them.
6. Send Freshness Signals That Match Real Updates
Of the assistants in Ahrefs' 2025 freshness study, ChatGPT showed the strongest preference for new content, citing URLs 458 days newer than organic Google results.
- Show visible published and updated dates.
- Set
dateModifiedin your Article schema. - Send an accurate
Last-Modifiedheader.
Change dates only when the content changes: new data, a revised recommendation, a corrected step. No study shows date markup alone earns citations, and a new date on an unchanged page is easy to spot.
7. Build Consensus Beyond Your Own Site
ChatGPT tends to repeat what several independent sources agree on. What other sites say about you therefore counts alongside what your own page says, and it's the checklist item you can't fix by editing HTML.
In a December 2025 correlation study, Ahrefs found YouTube mentions had the strongest link to AI visibility, at about 0.737, and branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with ChatGPT visibility. ChatGPT also showed the weakest correlation of the three assistants studied with most traditional authority signals, such as Domain Rating. These are correlations, not proof that mentions cause citations, but they point to practical work:
- Get into third-party comparisons and reviews in your category, with accurate facts about what you offer.
- Answer questions in communities where your audience asks them, such as Reddit and industry forums, without dropping links for their own sake.
- Publish on YouTube. Explainers and walkthroughs create mentions on the platform with the strongest correlation in the study.
- Keep your facts consistent everywhere. Product descriptions, pricing and positioning should match across your site, profiles and directories, so sources agree instead of contradicting each other.
Start by asking ChatGPT what it already says about your brand and category. Wrong or outdated facts in its answers usually trace back to third-party pages, and those pages are where the corrections belong. Consensus is the slowest item on the list. It's also the one a competitor can't copy overnight.
ChatGPT SEO: Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions that come up most once teams start working through the checklist, from how ChatGPT sources its answers to how you can tell whether your changes are working. Each answer is short and self-contained, the same way the checklist asks you to write.
Does ChatGPT use Google search results?
Partly, according to independent reporting and tests, though OpenAI hasn't confirmed it. ChatGPT appears to draw on several sources at once: Bing, scraped Google results and OpenAI's own index. The evidence on each is laid out in the section on where ChatGPT gets its sources, above. The practical upshot is the same either way: ranking in traditional search helps a page get retrieved, but it doesn't decide whether that page is the one quoted.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?
No. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are separate crawlers with separate jobs, so you can opt out of one without the other:
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it is a training decision.
- OAI-SearchBot makes pages eligible for ChatGPT search answers. Blocking it removes you from those answers, apart from bare navigational links.
A common setup for publishers who want citations but not training is to disallow GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. Whatever you choose, check that a blanket rule for all bots isn't overriding it.
How do I check whether ChatGPT cites my page?
Test it directly, then confirm it in your analytics:
- Ask ChatGPT, with search on, the questions your page is meant to answer, phrased the way a customer would, and note which sources it cites.
- Filter your analytics for referrals tagged
utm_source=chatgpt.com. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds that parameter to referral links automatically. - Re-run the same prompts after each change.
Answers vary between sessions and phrasings, so keep a simple log of prompt, date and cited URLs, and judge the trend across several prompts rather than any single reply.
Is SEO dead now that people search with ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT still retrieves its candidates from search systems, so crawlability, indexing and rankings remain the entry ticket. What's changed is what happens after retrieval. A page now also has to hold a clean, quotable answer, and your brand has to be described the same way across other sites.
That makes SEO the first half of the job rather than the whole of it. Teams that already rank start with an advantage: their pages are in the candidate pool, and the remaining work is mostly editorial.
Your ChatGPT Citation Checklist, Page by Page
Run the list in order, because each item depends on the one before it. Nothing else matters if OAI-SearchBot can't reach the page, and a well-structured answer won't get quoted if nobody else backs it up.
- Access — OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and at the CDN; GPTBot decided separately.
- Structure — one H1, logical H2/H3 levels, one idea per paragraph, sections that stand alone.
- Answers — a direct, link-free answer in the first two sentences under each heading.
- Coverage — adjacent sub-questions answered, entities named consistently.
- Sources — primary sources linked, original data shown with its method, author named.
- Freshness — visible dates,
dateModifiedandLast-Modifiedthat change only when the content does. - Consensus — accurate, consistent facts about you in reviews, communities and videos.
Access and structure are the quickest to test. AEO Tester checks crawler access, indexability, structured data and heading hierarchy in one click and ranks the fixes by impact. The rest is editorial work, so re-test your target prompts in ChatGPT after each update.
